How to Encourage Children’s Reading Through Storytelling

📚 How to Encourage Children’s Reading Through Storytelling

Children’s reading is one of the most powerful tools for child development. It stimulates imagination, strengthens family and school bonds, and opens doors to the formation of critical and creative readers. But in a world dominated by screens, how can we spark the enchantment of books? One of the answers lies in storytelling – an ancient art that remains current and necessary.

The Power of Storytelling

Storytelling transforms the act of reading into a collective and emotional experience. It is not just about narrating a text, but about creating an atmosphere of magic and connection between the child, the book, and the storyteller. By listening to stories, children learn self-expression, develop attentive listening, and expand their vocabulary.

In my work as an author of children’s and young adult books, I have often witnessed the transformation in children’s eyes when a narrative comes to life through voice, gestures, and even scenic objects. Stories such as Potiara, Akuan, the Curious Little Fish, and The Secret of the Colored Eggs awaken curiosity, teach human values, and bring children closer to the joy of reading.

🌱 Encouraging Reading at School and at Home

For parents and educators, encouraging children’s reading is not just about offering books, but about creating moments of enchantment. Storytelling can take place:

  • In the classroom, as a pedagogical project;

  • At home, as an affectionate routine between parents and children;

  • In libraries and cultural events, as a collective stimulus for reading promotion.

Cultural projects and reading workshops, such as those I develop in partnership with schools and libraries, prove that when children experience reading as pleasure, they naturally become readers.

📖 Children’s Literature as a Tool for Transformation

Children’s and young adult books are not just entertainment; they are a means of educating, raising awareness, and inspiring. Through children’s literature, children learn values such as friendship, empathy, respect, and social awareness. That is why projects supported by cultural incentive laws and independent initiatives from writers and publishers are so important to democratize access to books.

Editora Alecrim, which I direct, has the mission of supporting independent writers and bringing more books and stories to schools, book fairs, and communities. I believe that every published book is a seed of transformation.

🌟 Practical Tips to Encourage Reading Through Storytelling

  • Create a welcoming environment – use cushions, rugs, and soft lighting.

  • Choose age-appropriate books – short and illustrated stories for the little ones; more complex narratives for older children.

  • Use expressions and gestures – bring characters to life with your voice.

  • Include children in the narrative – ask questions, encourage them to imagine alternative endings.

  • Make it a routine – tell one story a day, creating emotional and literary bonds.

🌍 Conclusion

Encouraging children’s reading through storytelling is more than teaching: it is sowing memories, strengthening bonds, and opening doors to the future. In every word told, there is the possibility of transforming lives.

I believe that children’s and young adult literature, combined with education and culture, has the power to form not only readers but also more sensitive and conscious citizens. May we continue telling stories and, in doing so, writing a more human future.
